The Value of HEFG Membership

HEFG members are proud contributors to a learning community of peers who are dedicated to advancing the effectiveness of grantmaking in the Hawaiʻi environmental space.

A learning community

The HEFG’s mission is to increase the effectiveness of—and promote collaboration between—its members, and to steadily increase the amount of philanthropic support for Environment and Sustainability efforts in Hawai‘i.

HEFG members are thinkers and leaders who are interested in an array of topics including conservation, biocultural restoration, climate resiliency and adaptation, renewable energy, agriculture and food security, long-term sustainability, environmental justice, green infrastructure, and more.

HEFG Gatherings

HEFG members convene quarterly to learn from one another and gain access to community leaders, subject matter experts, and policy makers.

Gatherings are coordinated and curated to align with member interests and spotlight successful long-term projects, cutting-edge initiatives, partnerships, and innovative solutions in the environmental sphere.

The Annual Calendar

Members enjoy access for two representatives to attend the full suite of HEFG gatherings:

  • First quarter virtual learning lunch: members share project updates and intimately engage with high-level speakers.

  • Spring retreat: a one-day, in-person gathering on Oʻahu that includes field visits, guest speakers, and a networking dinner. Meals and ground transportation included.

  • August in-person learning lunch: members meet with Hawai’i’s elected and/or appointed officials on Oʻahu.

  • Fall retreat: a three-day, in-person neighbor island retreat with field visits, guest speakers, including state and county officials, panel discussions, and an evening reception. Meals and ground transportation included.

A peer network

As a forum for learning, the HEFG is a strict no-pitch zone. All HEFG gatherings are safe spaces for members to discuss topics of interest, share lessons learned, and explore new initiatives in the environmental grantmaking space.

While the HEFG itself does not engage in co-funding or public advocacy, members are encouraged to explore synergies and may collaborate with each other on various initiatives outside the HEFG.
